AMA Rejects Resolution on "Abusive" and "Hostile" Patients

The American Medical Association voted down a proposed resolution to create insurance billing codes that identify "abusive" and "hostile" patients.

The committee report from the meetings noted that, "Testimony was empathetic to the difficulty in working with non-compliant patients, but expressed concerns in labeling patients and acknowledged a desire to be sensitive to the possible mental health issues of non-compliant patients."

As noted by ICAN President Desiree Andrews, the resolution would have paved the way for further restrictions on patient autonomy, particularly for women seeking VBAC in a medical climate that is already resistant to it.
